   The Distinguished Alumnus Hall of Honor Award Nominating Procedure

Class of 1948            Hall of Honor 2011

Dr. Basil Pruitt received his MD degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in 1957. During his distinguished career he served in a number of positions, including Commander and Director of the U. S. Army Institute of Surgical Research (Army Burn Center), a position he held for 27 of his 35 years as a military surgeon. He currently serves as a professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

Kal Segrist is a well-known baseball player and coach. The 19-year-old infielder signed his first pro contract with the New York Yankees in 1951. Although Segrist appeared in only 20 games in the majors (13 with the Yankees, seven with the Orioles), he rubbed elbows with many of the New York immortals. Segrist became head baseball coach at Texas Tech University in 1968, when the Red Raiders made their debut in the Southwest Conference. He remained at Tech from 1965-87, serving as head coach from 1968-83.

The late Michael “Pinky” Higgins was a third baseman, manager, front office executive and scout in Major League Baseball who played for three teams and served as manager or general manager of the Boston Red Sox during the period of 1955 through 1965. He is a member of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. .

Verna Treadwell ~ Raised by her near-invalid mother who taught piano students at home she became Dallas `youngest piano teacher at age 5 and taught hundreds of students in her home during her lifetime.She started saving for her own piano at age 5 and eventually became the very proud owner of a Stein way Medium Grand piano, not a baby grand as she was quick to remind everyone.Cast by her auditorium teacher as a play firefly, she vowed at the age 8 to share the magic she felt by becoming an auditorium teacher herself.  A weakness in math kept her from the National Honor Society and a formal scholarship.

Thomas Yium ~ National Honor Society, Student Council, Allied Youth, “ACORN” News Editor and Baseball manager at Adamson 1948, 1949 and 1950. The first two years as manager of State Champion Teams.  Graduated University of Texas 1955 with B.S. in Aeronautical Engineering and in 1956 with M.S.in Mechanical Engineering. Member of the Scabbard and Blade Honorary Military Society and the Air Force ROTC Honorary Arnold Air Society.  Managed University of Texas Baseball Team.  Graduated University of New Mexico 1964 with M.S. in Electrical Engineering.  Served in the U.S. Air Force for 4 years.  Served as a Civil Servant working 40 years for the Air Force Weapons Laboratory, The Air Force Communications Command, the Air Force Space Command and the NORAD/AFSPACOM space based system to warn of enemy Missile launches.Elected as the only civilian to the U.S. Air Communications and Information Hall of Fame.
